Men and boys bathe at the Ahilya Bai Ghat on the banks of the river Ganges in Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in India. Despite repeated efforts by the national government of India since the 1980s the Ganges remains one of the most polluted rivers in the world – about 300,000 bodies are cremated here every year and the remains swept away by the river.
