About Tom Jenkins
For more than 25 years, Tom Jenkins has travelled the globe covering sports events and personalities for The Guardian and Observer newspapers. His career highlights include six football World Cups and five summer Olympic Games, via Butlins Minehead for tug-of-war to St Moritz for horses racing on ice. As a child Tom was obsessed with sport, but admits his ability didn't match his enthusiasm. Tom studied Documentary Photography at the prestigious Newport college, South Wales, under Magnum Photos’ David Hurn. Leaving in 1989 he freelanced for the agencies and newspapers including The Independent and Sunday Telegraph. In 1990 he began shooting regularly for The Guardian, adding the Observer in 1993. His images have appeared regularly since.
Tom’s first book of sports photography 'In the Moment' was published in June 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics and was supported by a solo exhibition in London and Newcastle. His photos have been used for Royal Mail stamps and bizarrely even featured as a question on University Challenge. He lives in London with his wife and two children, none of whom are remotely interested in football.
