About Denis Thorpe

Denis Thorpe was born in Mansfield in 1932 and joined his local weekly newspaper with the ambition to become a journalist. After National Service with the Royal Air Force Thorpe decided to pursue photojournalism, inspired by the magazine Picture Post and early Magnum photographers.

Thorpe became a Guardian staff photographer in 1974, covering assignments across the globe spanning a twenty two year career with the paper. He has received numerous awards for his photo essays and news photography and produced several books and exhibitions. Throughout his career he has always found time for personal projects - photographing people, atmospheric landscapes, and sometimes the surreal. It is from that work this collection was selected.

Thorpe's latest exhibition A View from the North will be on show at: Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, 15th Sept - 20th October 2018.
